GENERAL INFORMATION ON ROMANIA

 

Location:  State situated in South-Eastern Europe, north of the Balkan Peninsula, in the Lower Danube basin, bordering on the Black Sea
Area: 238,391 sq. km (91,500 sq. miles)
- 13th country in Europe and 80th in the world as size.
Area Distribution: arable land (39.2%), forests (28%), pastures and hayfields (20.3%), vineyards and vine nurseries (2.5%), waters and ponds (3.7%), buildings, roads and railways (6.1%).
Climate: Temperate-continental with four clear-cut seasons. In the winter the average temperature is -3ºC, while in the summer the temperature averages 22 -24ºC. Average annual rainfall: ca. 640 mm.
Population: (census, 7 Jan. 1992): 22,810,035 inhabitants (ranked 13th in Europe and 43rd in the world). Urban population: 55%; rural population: 45%. Population density: 95.7 inhabitants per sq. km. (ranked 26th in Europe and 74th in the world).
Ethnic structure: 89.4% Romanians and 10.6% ethnic minorities. Birth rate: 10.5‰, death rate 13.2‰, natural growth -2.7‰. Life expectancy: 69.05 years for men and 73.09 for women. Population structure by age: 0-14 years (19.2%), 15-59 years (62.3%), 60 years and over (18.5%).
Capital: Bucharest (1,521 sq. km, with a population of 2,354,510)
Administrative Division: 40 counties and Bucharest municipality, 260 towns, 2,688 communes (with 13,000 villages).
Main Cities: Constanta (350,581), Iasi (344,425), Timisoara (334,115), Cluj (328,602), Galati (326,141), Brasov (323,602), Craiova (303,959).
Ports: On the Black Sea: Constanta, Mangalia, Sulina.

Currency: 1 leu (plural: lei).
State organization: Republic, according to the Constitution voted by Parliament on November 21st, 1991 and validated by referendum on December 8th 1991. The legislative branch is represented by the two-chamber Parliament (the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate), elected for a 4-year term. The president is elected by universal vote for a maximum of two 4-year terms.
Working hours: Monday through Friday, 8 am to 4pm.
National and legal holidays: January 1st and 2nd (New Year), Easter Monday, May Day, December 1st (Romania's national day), December 25th and 26th (Christmas).
